A Port Everglades employee died recently after being struck by a tractor-trailer as a pedestrian after leaving work in the afternoon. The victim worked at Sun Terminal in the Port Everglades complex and was pronounced dead at the scene. A Broward County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson advised that the tractor-trailer was owned by Martainer Inc. of Miami.
Although motorists might think that truckers have a better field of vision because they sit so high up, truckers actually have very large blind spots surrounding them, particularly at the front and rear. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that there’s a pedestrian accident about every seven minutes and a fatality every two hours. Older adults and children are the most likely victims of pedestrian accidents.
Most pedestrian accidents are the fault of the driver of a motor vehicle. The most common cause of these accidents is distracted driving when a driver’s attention is diverted from the road. Distracted driving can involve:
- Texting or using cellular devices
- Using navigational devices
- Interacting with passengerss
- Eating, drinking or smoking
Given the facts of this accident, the family of the victim in this case may have two cases. One might be against the trucking company and the other could possibly a worker’s compensation case.
