Florida Zoo Fined After 4,000-Pound Rhino Injures Worker

Florida Workers’ Compensation Benefits

On February 26, a 50-year-old, two-ton rhinoceros injured a zookeeper of the Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society in West Palm Beach, a situation that resulted it being fined $14,551 by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (O.S.H.A.). The employee had been seriously injured when she was struck repeatedly by the animal’s horn of a rhino named Archie. The O.S.H.A. fine was based upon the employer’s failure to protect its employees from recognized hazards when training and feeding its animals. Archie had been a fixture at the zoo since 1975. The worker suffered severe injuries to her back and legs and unfortunately has not yet returned to work.
