Across the U.S., thousands of people harmed by using Roundup have filed claims against Bayer AG, which bought Monsanto in 2018. Monsanto has manufactured the herbicide since 1973. Although the company insists that its product is safe, the Internal Agency for Research disagrees. Why the lawsuits? While the Plaintiffs admit that Roundup does a great job of eradicating weeds, they also contend that the active ingredient glyphosate. causes cancer. As such, people who use it regularly are at a greater risk of becoming sick. Bayer however shirked its corporate social responsibility over profits and failed to warn the public of the danger. Further and while not explaining why, Bayer stated that it plans to eventually change the Roundup formula.
The litigation alleges and juries have held that Monsanto was aware of the link between Roundup and cancer for over 30 years. In 2019, juries reached verdicts of $2 billion and $80 million respectively for California plaintiffs who said they were diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after using Roundup. Attorneys also won another $289 million for a former groundskeeper who became terminally ill. Recently, the U.S. Supreme Court has rejected another Bayer’s appeal.
