A truck driver was critically injured after his vehicle crashed on I-595 in Davie, officials say. The Employee was driving in the course and scope of his employment transporting cooking oil, westbound at Nob Hill Road, when he suffered an accident. Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Indiana Miranda, said that the employee lost control after a “tire failure.” As a result, the vehicle caught fire and spilled oil onto the roadway. Traffic in the westbound lanes of I-595 between Pine Island and Nob Hill roads were closed for hours, Fortunately, the unnamed worker, a man in his 30s, was able to make it out of the truck before firefighters arrived. Miranda said he suffered severe burns and was taken immediately to the Ryder Trauma Center. The Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue, Hollywood Fire Rescue hazmat teams and Davie Fire Rescue all came to the scene.
Fortunately, this worker should be covered by Florida Workers’ Compensation insurance. Workers’ Compensation is a benefit that is available to nearly all employees in Florida who suffer “an injury that arose out of and in the course of their employment” and even if it was their own fault. This is true whether or not you are a full time, part time or even seasonal worker. The insurance coverage is available to pay an injured person’s medical care and a portion of their lost wages, and at no cost to them.
