Each year, about 9,000 infants in the United States develop necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). This potentially deadly condition develops when a premature baby is fed cow’s milk-based infant formula. Scientists have known this for well over a decade, yet none of the major infant formula brands provide a warning on the label.

What is NEC?

NEC occurs when bacteria found in cow’s milk invades an infant’s intestinal wall. The bacteria causes infection and inflammation that can ultimately destroy the intestinal tissue. This creates permanent scarring, narrowing, or destruction of a baby’s intestines, causing infections, lifelong complications, or even death.

Assessing the Risk

Several peer-reviewed studies link NEC to cow’s milk-based baby formula and milk fortifier. A 2014 study found premature infants to have a 320% greater risk of developing NEC if they were fed cow’s-milk based formula or milk fortifier. In addition:

• 91% of the infants who develop NEC are born premature.
• 15-40% of infants with NEC die.
• About 7% of premature infants develop NEC.

Failure to Warn

Studies have shown for years that feeding premature babies human milk-based formulas and fortifiers reduces or eliminates the risk of NEC, yet most formula manufacturers have never told the parents who buy their products of the dangers, or of the alternatives.

Human milk-based formulas have been available since 2014, and other alternative formulas have been around for decades, but manufacturers continue to profit from formulas that put their tiniest customers at risk.
