Help from a Talcum Powder Cancer Lawyer
Juries have punished Johnson & Johnson over its handling of its baby powder, including one in St. Louis last year that ordered the world’s largest maker of healthcare products to pay about $4.7 billion to more than 20 women who blamed their cancers on the product. That verdict however is being appealed.
The largest single verdict came in the first California trial in August 2017. The jury awarded a woman $417 million. She had used Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower for more than 40 years. She died from ovarian cancer a month after winning the trial.
A New Jersey state jury on Thursday ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay $750 million in punitive damages to four people who said their use of the company’s talcum powders caused cancer, the latest legal loss for the health-care giant.
Johnson & Johnson was ordered by a St. Louis jury to pay more than $110 million to a Virginia woman who blamed her ovarian cancer on the company’s talcum products. Imerys Talc America, which provided the talc to J&J, was ordered by the jury to pay about $100,000.
A Missouri jury recently ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay $72 million to the family of a woman whose death by ovarian cancer was linked to her daily use of talcum-based Johnson & Johnson’ Baby Powder and Shower to Shower products.
Another St. Louis Missouri jury ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay a woman $70 million dollars ($65 million in punitive damages, $2.5 million for pain and suffering, another $2.5 million from co-defendant Imerys Talc America for supplying the talc used in the product). She had used Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder for feminine hygiene for nearly (50) years, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, had undergone chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery to try and control its spread. The Plaintiff had no knowledge of the potential cancer risks of using talcum powder.
About 16,800 plaintiffs have filed lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson in U.S. state and federal courts alleging the company’s talcum powders caused ovarian cancer and that Johnson & Johnson failed to properly warn consumers of this risk of using Johnson & Johnson’ Baby Powder and Shower to Shower products.
Although the defendants have won some cases, juries have returned billions of dollars in verdicts for plaintiffs, and lawsuits continue to pour in. Most settlements so far have been with individual plaintiffs for undisclosed amounts.
